As anglers, we can help sustain quality fishing\nopportunities by taking good care of the fish we catch and the waterways they\ncall home. And recently, one local fly fishing club went above and beyond to\nimprove trout habitat on the Boise River. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
For the second time in three years, the Boise Valley Fly Fishers<\/a> (BVFF) completed a\ngravel augmentation project to help improve spawning habitat<\/a>\nfor wild rainbow and brown trout in the Boise River. According to the latest Idaho\nFish and Game (IDFG) surveys, the gravel work from the club\u2019s first project helped\nturn the side channel where it took place into one of the river\u2019s most productive spawning\nchannels<\/a>. But gravel in river systems eventually finds its way downstream, so\nBVFF recently added a second batch of gravel to the same area. <\/p>\n\n\n\n BVFF volunteers raked the fresh gravel\u2014which was donated\nby Sunroc and delivered by Boise Flood District 10\u2014into place in late February.\nWhile the Boise River receives regular stockings of hatchery rainbow trout from\nIDFG, it is the wild populations of large rainbow and brown trout that provide\nthe best fishing opportunities. Helping these fish successfully propagate\nfuture generations will go a long way toward preserving the Boise River as a unique\nurban trout fishery for local anglers to enjoy.
